After a short break, we\u2019re thrilled to return with an exciting update from the Munduruku territory of Takuara in the Brazilian Amazon.<\/p>\n

In March, a new chapter began for the region\u2019s environmental protection efforts: a visual monitoring and documentation training was completed for the newly formed Munduruku Water Guardian group<\/b>. This milestone initiative brought together senior Indigenous leaders, group coordinators, and youth from the community.<\/p>\n

The training was led by Treesistance representative Vivi Borari<\/b>, who focused on equipping the Guardians with vital skills in using cutting-edge tools\u2014zoom cameras and drones\u2014that will help document illegal activities such as predatory fishing<\/b>, and identify routes used by illegal loggers and hunters<\/b> entering via the river.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Vivi\u2019s own words:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTerritorial monitoring is an important tool for us, Indigenous peoples, to continue monitoring and responding to threats to our territory and our waters. Guardians in Action: Dredging Confrontation Leads to Legal Response<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Guardians\u2019 impact was immediate.<\/span><\/p>\n

On their first excursion, they identified a vessel illegally dredging<\/b> the river within their territory (dredging being a process used to deepen waterways, in this case to enable large soy transport ships to access deeper parts of the Amazon\u2014often at the cost of Indigenous lands and vital ecosystems) <\/i>\u2014a serious environmental threat linked to large-scale soy transportation, often tied to forest destruction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to their swift action, the community filed a formal complaint<\/b>, and the Federal Public Ministry (MPF)<\/b> has since requested the suspension of the dredging<\/b> and official marking of the Tapaj\u00f3s River<\/b>, which runs through the region.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Supporting the Guardians: Partnership for Long-Term Impact<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Treesistance<\/b> partners with Indigenous peoples in the Brazilian Amazon to protect primary rainforest using bold, tangible strategies built on four strategic pillars:<\/span><\/p>\n

    This innovative model provides the technology, logistical support, and training needed for the Munduruku people of Bragan\u00e7a\/ Marituba and Takuara<\/b> to prevent predatory fishing<\/b>, stop invasions via waterways<\/b>, and protect the precious ecosystems that both they\u2014and we\u2014depend on.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Scaling Up: Boats, Drones, and Inter-Territorial Cooperation<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

    90% of the project funds had been deployed. Two smaller speedboats\u2014one for each territory\u2014have been purchased, along with two high-quality drones. Once the boats arrive, a two-day joint workshop will be held to begin coordinated monitoring efforts. The aim is to support inter-territorial collaboration in protecting a 160km stretch along the Tapaj\u00f3s National Forest.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
